Quick Start

1. Create and select text

Create a text layer in an active composition, then select it in the Timeline panel. You can select multiple text layers to apply or change Type Jazz on all of them at once.

2. Apply Type Jazz

Open Window > Type Jazz, then click the Apply Type Jazz button.

The panel adds the Type Jazz preset to the selected text layers. Click the same button again to remove Type Jazz.

3. Set the animation values

Open the Type Jazz effect in Effect Controls. Expand Animation In and set one or more transform values such as Position, Scale, Rotation, Tracking, or Blur.

The values describe the animated state. Type Jazz handles the motion back to the text layer’s normal appearance.

4. Choose the motion

Use the panel’s In Animation Type button to choose:

Oscillate: moves through positive and negative values
Bounce: moves repeatedly in one direction
Linear: moves directly from the values you set to the normal state

Use the In Direction button to choose Left to Right, Right to Left, Center Out, or Outward In. That is the direction the animation travels through the text, not the direction the characters move.

5. Choose how the text is divided

Use the Based On button to animate by Characters, Words, or Lines. Alt/Option-click Characters to leave spaces out, so a space is not a step in the animation.

6. Refine the motion

Adjust Ease High, Ease Low, Animator Width, Oscillations, and the decay controls in Effect Controls until the motion feels right.

To change the overall duration, reposition the existing Animation Progress keyframes. Type Jazz is designed around adjusting its supplied animation rather than keyframing every transform control yourself.

7. Add an out animation

Expand Animation Out, set its values, then use the panel’s Out Animation Type and Out Direction buttons. Enable Hide Text if the layer should disappear when the out animation finishes.
