Variable Fonts

Type Jazz 1.1.0 can animate the axes built into a variable font, such as Weight, Width, Slant, or other axes defined by the typeface.

This feature requires After Effects 26.0 or newer.

Add font axes

1. Select one or more text layers using a variable font.
2. Click the Variable font axes button in the Type Jazz panel.
3. Check the axes you want to animate.
4. Click OK.

If a selected layer does not already have Type Jazz, the axis button applies it automatically before opening the axis dialog.

Type Jazz adds a companion effect named Type Jazz Axes. Each selected axis gets separate In and Out sliders, such as Weight In and Weight Out.

Animate an axis

Open Type Jazz Axes in Effect Controls and adjust the axis sliders. The In slider follows the Animation In settings; the Out slider follows Animation Out.

Adding an axis is visually neutral: both sliders begin at the font’s current axis value, so the text does not jump when the effect is added.

Add or remove individual axes

Click the axis button again. Axes already applied to the selected layer appear checked.

• Check another axis to add it.
• Uncheck an axis to remove it.
• Click OK to apply the new selection.

Existing axis values are preserved when the companion effect is rebuilt.

Remove all axes

Alt/Option-click the Variable font axes button to remove all animated font axes from the selected layers.

Removing the main Type Jazz effect also removes the Type Jazz Axes companion effect.

If no axes appear

Confirm that:

• You are using After Effects 26.0 or newer.
• The selected layer uses a variable font.
• The font exposes animation axes to After Effects.
